Pedal Assist

E-bikes tend to include one of three pedal assist options. Most models include a type of assist that doesn’t require you to pedal at all—although you’re welcome to if you’d like to increase your speed or get a bit of exercise in. Others will include a pedal assist that automatically starts once a certain speed is reached. In the same vein, some e-bikes will come with a pedal assist you can adjust as you ride by changing the torque and power of the engine. 

Engine Type

E-bikes tend to come with one of two types of engines: a hub motor or a mid-drive motor. Hub motors are a great choice for casual riders, who are looking for convenience and affordability at the expense of speed and a lightweight model. However, if an e-bike is going to be your preferred mode of transportation, you may want to invest in a more expensive mid-drive motor. These will travel at higher speeds, and tackle inclines better than a hub motor would.
